1st week notices from Women's officer of OUSU

Of perhaps most interest to readers of this blog is the first notice on assertiveness training.  I've heard Dr. Frith speak several times and she's very good-- she describes how she is introverted and used to lack self-confidence but gradually developed effective strategies for coming across as self-assured and authoritative.

Assertiveness Training:

Thursday 28th January 12 noon to 3.00pm at Balliol College
WOULD YOU LIKE TO FEEL MORE CONFIDENT THAT YOU CAN CLEARLY EXPRESS YOUR POINT OF VIEW TO OTHER PEOPLE?
Raising difficult matters with our peers, and particularly with our seniors, can be very daunting. Yet it is important that we build confidence that we can express our views and needs clearly and accurately at the most appropriate time, truthfully and without exaggeration.  The aim of this workshop is to find a way to help you stand your ground with greater confidence when this seems appropriate.

The 3-hour interactive workshop is designed to get students started in expressing their views more clearly and with more confidence, and to decide when they might choose to do so.

The facilitator is Dr Peggy Frith, who advises clinical medical students at the Oxford University Medical School and also delivers assertiveness training within the University's popular Springboard personal development programme for women. She has designed this workshop particularly for undergraduates and will discuss some typical dilemmas you are likely to have faced.

The workshop is suitable for both men and women. It demands only the wish to begin to change, and a small amount of courage to 'have a go' at a modest problem of your own choice and practice expressing your own needs more clearly.

Well Being Week:

Everyone knows Oxford is stressful and can get you down. After labs, seminars and essay crises, it's hard to find time to look after yourself, but it needn't be a hassle - it should be fun!

In 3rd Week, there is a huge range of events and activities open to all students. Enjoy a countryside pub walk, sip aphrodisiac cocktails and nibbles while learning to salsa, attend workshops on mental health or disordered eating, explore female sexuality, try Tai Chi or meditation, watch Magdalen Film Society's 'Mentalities' series, or give your views on support for students with mental health difficulties.

Domestic Abuse Awareness Workshop:

Friday 2nd Week, 29th January, Rainolds Room in Corpus Christi, 2-5pm
This is a workshop to both raise awareness around issues to do with domestic violence and abuse and to highlight how this affects students, but also to discuss and work through how to support those wo have survived domestic abuse and those who are currently living through it. This workshop is going to be run by Lisa Stokes-King the OUSU Student Advisor, who is a Domestic Abuse Champion and is thoroughly trained in these issues. To book your place please email women@ousu.org. The workshop is open to both men and women.

Disordered Eating Training:

Friday 3rd Week, 5th February, Rainolds Room in Corpus Christi, 2-5pm
This is a workshop to raise awareness about disordered eating and how to support those who suffer from it. The Vagina Monologues:

WomCam is presenting a production of Eve Ensler's famed "The Vagina Monologues" this term.  Fancy yourself an actress? Then please come along to auditions next Saturday, Jan 23 at Lady Margaret Hall from 2-4 pm, exact room TBC. No previous acting experience required.  If you will be coming, please email your interest and the times you would absolutely not be available for rehearsals to emily.pfefer@lmh.ox.ac.uk. You do not need to sign up for a time slot as the director would like you all there for the whole time, or as much of it as you can as possible.  This play is about women's empowerment and it's important to build a community feel and that you feel comfortable around your fellow actors.  Also, the director, Marchella Ward, would like to see how you interact on stage with each other.
For the audition, please come prepared to perform one monologue of your choice from the attached script (see attachment).  This does not need to be memorized, just prepared per your interpretation.  Please print off the entire script and bring your copy to the audition as after you perform your monologue, you will be given some group bits to complete as well. Good luck and we hope to include as many people as possible. If you want to be involved, but don't want to act, please email your other interests to the same address.  Hope to see you there!
